What communications system did your organization use before switching?

Joshua Shire, Information Systems Manager at Hyduke Energy Services: Hyduke used a series of separate branch PBXes connected to PRI and/or analog lines.

Patrick Dion, Systems Administrator at Driving Force: Prior to SIP service, Driving Force negotiated contracts with local service providers for PRI or analog trunks to interface with our Mitel system.

What caused you to convert to SIP trunks?

Hyduke Energy Services: We converted to a SIP trunk system to reduce our telecommunication costs, both direct and indirect.

Driving Force: As our company expanded into new areas, we found it difficult to find cost-effective solutions. We also have remote sites that operate from a Mitel system through our internal wide area network, which caused issues when it came to ensuring handset location information was accurate during emergency situations. SIP is a flexible solution that enables us to quickly and effectively open new sites with full phone capabilities, without being held back by limited local provider options or having to install new controller systems. SIP also gives us location information to ensure accuracy if emergency services are needed.

SIP Service Features and Benefits

Can you summarize the benefits of the switch?

Hyduke Energy Services: Yes; lower costs, easier management, and better uptime.

Driving Force: Using SIP trunks, we are able to provide seamless service to our locations without engaging local service providers, signing expensive contracts, or adding controllers to our Mitel cluster (group of Mitel systems connected together).

What are the key SIP trunking features your organization uses?

Hyduke Energy Services: We’re able to support users across the continent from a single virtualized PBX instance running on our private cloud.

Driving Force: Flexible trunk allocation, burstable trunk allocation based on utilization, dynamic allocation of DIDs, and local e911 service.

How would you describe SIP voice quality?

Hyduke Energy Services: Same or better than analog lines.

Driving Force: We have found the voice quality of SIP service is indistinguishable when compared to other digital telecommunication solutions.

Cost Savings and Reliability

How would you describe the reliability of SIP service?

Hyduke Energy Services: Depending on the architecture and provider, it can be better than PRI.

Driving Force: Although we have only recently started using SIP we have not had any reliability issues. Our risk analysis found that reliability would not be any different than that of PRI.

Has the switch to SIP trunking resulted in cost savings?

Hyduke Energy Services: Yes it has.

Driving Force: It’s too early to comment on exact cost savings. However, our projections show significant cost savings and increased value due to SIP’s flexibility and minimal hardware requirements.

Does your organization use SIP trunking redundancy and resiliency features, like failover in case of voice or data trouble?

Hyduke Energy Services: Yes, our SIP solution incorporates both multiple redundant paths to our providers, and multiple providers.

Driving Force: Absolutely! Voice or data failure at a given location greatly impacts that site’s performance. Resiliency is one of our primary concerns when looking into a new solution. With proper configuration, SIP trunking offers exceptional availability.

Final Thoughts

Any advice for other companies considering moving to SIP service?

Hyduke Energy Services: Take your time on design and testing. Ensure you engage a competent consultant during these vital stages.

Driving Force: SIP is great, but as with any technology do your due diligence and make sure it’s right for you. Fortunately, SIP trunking is a very flexible solution that can be molded to meet a wide variety of needs. Just be aware of your site limitations and expectations.
